About the Artwork
In the fall of 1992, I was beginning my junior year at Illinois. Not yet knowing that I would be a career
social worker, I studied cultural anthropology and archaeology. I was drawn to issues around social
justice. After discovering the writings of the radical Catholic mystic and co-founder of the Catholic
Worker movement, Dorothy Day, I chose to investigate her legacy firsthand. The St. Jude’s Catholic
Worker house was a large three-story family home converted into housing for women and children with
a food pantry in the basement. I took the tour and quickly volunteered as a Saturday Soup Kitchen
leader. One of the main tenets of the Catholic Worker was to live out the Works of Mercy and I took this
calling personally.
For those of you who have known me over the years, you know how the story unfolds. For the past
three decades, I have practiced the profession of social work in one way or another. I have also
maintained my subscription to the monthly Catholic Worker newspaper published and distributed in
NYC.
In the fall of 2023, an old college friend, who washed dishes with me at the Worker back in the 90’s, sent
me the book “The Unruly Saint” by D.L. Mayfield, a recent publication about the life of Dorothy Day. I
was inspired to create block prints of my favorite quotes of hers.
Long story short, in May of 2024, my print was accepted and published in the Catholic Worker
newspaper.
“The World Will Be Saved By Beauty.”
I firmly believe this to be true.
To celebrate this full circle, I have partnered with @ kinddesignsbyvalentine to offer this design on t-
shirts in a presale format. I plan to donate 32% of my profit to our local F.A.R.M café @farmcafe (Feed
All Regardless of Means) honoring the legacy of Dorothy Day and my career in social work.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story. Please share if you want or just take a minute and
familiarize yourself with Dorothy Day!
Oh and get a shirt if this speaks to you!
